HSE issues measles alert for passengers on Dublin to Sligo train

Symptoms of measles can include cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough.

The HSE has issued an alert about a possible measles case linked to a Dublin to Sligo train journey.

People who travelled on March 28 from Dublin to Sligo in Carriage D on the 5:05pm train have been urged to be aware of measles symptoms developing.

The warning of a potential infection applies to anyone who was in that particular carriage for 15 minutes or more only.

A suspected measles case is under investigation by the Department of Public Health, HSE West and North West at present.

"Members of the public may have been exposed to measles (on this train)," a spokeswoman said.

Public Health wishes to advise people about the risk of measles infection to non-immune individuals.

Anyone affected is advised to be aware of signs and symptoms of measles for 21 days from that date, until April 18.

" Measles is a highly infectious disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in children under one year of age, pregnant women, and the immunosuppressed. If you are in one of these groups, please seek advice from your GP," the spokeswoman said.

Symptoms of measles can include cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a cough.

Other signs include sore, red eyes and a temperature of 38C or above, along with a rash.

This rash usually appears on the head and neck first and then spreads to the rest of the body.
