Three women lost their lives in separate road collisions in Cork and Waterford within two hours of each other on Sunday, on the latest day of carnage on Ireland’s roads.

Two people were killed and two children were seriously injured after a head-on collision between two cars at Navigation Road on the N72 Mallow/Killarney Road, just before 4pm.

The two people who died, both women who were pronounced dead at the scene, were the two drivers involved. One was aged in her 60s, the other in her 40s.

The bodies of both of the women were removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital (CUH), where an autopsy will take place in due course.

The passengers of the second car — two children, one man and one woman — were also conveyed to CUH for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

The injured children are aged eight and five.

Emergency services attended the scene within minutes, with traffic diversions put in place following the collision while gardaí inspected the scene to try to determine the cause of the tragedy.

The Millstreet-based air ambulance was put on standby to support emergency services. A number of passing motorists also stopped to offer help at the scene.

Investigating gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses.

Any road users with camera footage, including dash-cam, who were travelling in the area between 3pm and 4pm are asked to make this footage available.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on (022) 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station," a garda spokesperson said.

Three-car Waterford collision

Separately, a woman aged in her 60s was killed after a three-car collision on the N25 at Moonameen in Waterford.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the collision, which occurred at approximately 2.10pm.

Her body was taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford, where an autopsy will take place in due course.

The driver and passenger of the second car, a man and woman both aged in their 50s, were conveyed to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of serious injuries. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

A woman aged in her 60s, who was driving the third car, was conveyed by air ambulance to CUH for treatment of serious injuries, believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The road is currently closed for technical examination.

Gardaí are also appealing for any witnesses to this incident.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 1.20pm and 2.20pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí," a spokesperson said.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dungarvan Garda Station on (058) 48600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."

The deaths mean that 40 people have been killed on Irish roads in 2025 so far.
