‘A nice top’ paired with jeans has long been hailed a Saturday night sartorial staple. Simple yet stylish, there isn’t a hot trend or red-carpet gown to rival its allure—until now.

Thanks to the redux of maximalism on runways and en rue, this wardrobe winner has now been exaggerated out of all proportions. Loud, proud and meant to be noticed, your quiet drink at the pub just got interesting.

This season the thrill is in the frills. Ruffles, flounce, peplums and puff sleeves provide the necessary frisson after a storm-soaked winter. Intentionally amplified, these aren’t your average details. These playful proportions cajole you out of your comfort zone and encourage you to take risks while effortlessly maintaining their ‘nice top’ status.

Cult Scandi brand GANNI embodies this dynamism with transparent and technical fabrics that meld romance with utility. Try sheer shirting layered over underpinnings like roll necks or tonal bodysuits.

Likewise, London label Sister Jane’s delightfully girlish tulle tops lean into their froufrou aesthetic with artful ruching and pops of fresh pastels as does designer Susan Fang, known for her frothy femininity and skilful use of gauze.

For an elevated vibe, the Chloé girl muse still prevails. Think pussy bows and chiffon-tiered sleeves (try H&M or & Other Stories) or a stiff asymmetric ruffle top that makes its point without any fuss (our friends at Essentiel Antwerp, of course). Equally, Mango’s Khaite-inspired silk top wins big with its dramatic neckline. Pair with a blazer and fisherman sandals for oodles of chic.
