Smart home tech has made our lives more convenient, but automated window coverings are often overlooked. The SwitchBot Roller Shade is an adjustable, fabric-replaceable design that fits a wide range of window sizes, with app, voice, and remote control support, and integration with Matter-compatible hubs.
SwitchBot has designed the Roller Shade with versatility in mind. Unlike traditional motorised blinds that require exact sizing, this model is fully adjustable, covering window widths from 58cm to 185cm. Currently, there’s a choice of four sizes and two colours: white and grey. The ability to replace the fabric is excellent, allowing you to switch between blackout, UV protection, and thermal insulation materials as needed, without replacing the entire unit.
Build quality is excellent, and the retractable curtain box feels well-made. The sleek design makes it a seamless addition to modern and traditional interiors. Installation is straightforward, and even minor measurement errors won’t be a problem due to the flexible fit. However, while the adjustable mechanism is convenient, some users might prefer a more tailored solution if they have uniquely shaped windows. Before ordering the shade, you must measure your window opening to ensure you get the closest possible size. Essentially, you need to ensure the size you order is larger than your window frame.
You'll need to cut the shade yourself, but the kit includes all the necessary tools and a jig to make the process as simple and hassle-free as possible. The included cutter is easier to use than a standard blade, as it’s specifically designed to cut the circular shape of the roller material securely, cleanly, and safely.
The instructions are well laid out, with minimal text and clear illustrations that should be easy for anyone to follow. However, SwitchBot has a YouTube video on the installation if you prefer a visual guide.
One of the things I love about the Roller Shade is its ultra-quiet operation. In silent mode, it runs at just 30dB, which is barely noticeable — ideal for bedrooms, offices, or shared living spaces.
Battery life is another strong point. A full charge lasts up to eight months, which is impressive for a motorised shade. For a genuinely hands-off experience, an optional solar panel can be added to keep it powered indefinitely. This eco-friendly touch reduces maintenance and means no worrying about recharging.
The shade moves smoothly and responds quickly to commands via the SwitchBot app, remote control, or voice assistants. Additionally, it includes a wired remote with physical buttons for manual control.
The Roller Shade is designed to integrate into existing smart home ecosystems. It supports Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri Shortcuts, and with a SwitchBot Hub 2, it’s compatible with Matter, making it easier to connect across multiple platforms.
A key advantage is percentage-based control, which allows precise adjustments rather than just opening or closing fully. If you want a little light in the morning or need full blackout for a home cinema setup, you can fine-tune positioning.
Group control is another useful feature, enabling you to manage up to eight blinds simultaneously — perfect for large rooms or open-plan spaces. Scheduled automation also works well, letting you program shades to adjust at sunrise or sunset. The ability to have your blinds automatically open and close when you’re not at home is a great bonus for security.
However, it’s worth noting that Matter support requires a SwitchBot hub, adding an extra cost for users who want full smart home integration.
The SwitchBot Roller Shade is a well-designed, versatile smart blind solution with great automation features and strong smart home integration. The adjustable width and fabric-replaceable design make it stand out, and whisper-quiet operation ensures minimal disruption. Battery life is excellent, and the optional solar panel is a great eco-friendly addition. While Matter support requires an extra hub, and some may prefer a custom-fitted alternative, this is one of the most flexible and user-friendly smart shades available today.
