The Domino’s Men’s Super League playoff quarter-final between rivals UCC Demons and Energywise Ireland Neptune is to be replayed.
The National League Committee has ruled that the fixture will be replayed following a scoring error made by a game official during the first quarter of last Sunday’s game at Mardyke Arena.
Demons won the original fixture on a 100-93 scoreline after a late rally.
A Basketball Ireland statement on the matter read: "A two-point basket by Energywise Ireland Neptune player Tamyrik Fields in the first quarter was incorrectly allocated to UCC Demons player Scott Hannigan.
"At half-time the game footage was reviewed by the game officials, subsequently Neptune were awarded the two points for Fields’ basket, however game officials failed to deduct the additional points originally allocated to UCC Demons.
"The NLC acknowledge that human error has occurred. In the interest of the fairness and integrity of the sport and the competition in question, they have decided that the game is to be replayed this weekend at UCC Demons' home venue, with a date and time to be confirmed.
"The NLC have applied FIBA Rules and Regulations in reaching this conclusion."
The matter, the statement notes, is "not subject to further appeal".
"The decision by the NLC to replay the fixture cannot be appealed, as per C.5 of these regulations, which states: “The decision of the competent body is also considered a ‘field of play rule’ decision and is not subject to further review or appeal”.
The winners of this weekend’s replayed playoff quarter-final will subsequently play Garvey’s Tralee Warriors in the semi-finals on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday next week.
