22-acre Kilkenny farm fetches €18k/acre at auction

Last featured here on March 4, a 21.6-acre farm at Pleberstown, near Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, was successfully sold at online auction recently by Gorey-based auctioneers Quinn Property.
It was the latest in its ongoing series of online auctions, and the sale took place on March12. Going under the hammer was a neat grassland holding laid out in four divisions, about 6km from Thomastown.
With its good road frontage, the farm had potential to obtain planning permission for a dwelling, as well as the more clear-cut attraction of good-quality pasture in a convenient location.
The farm benefits from a natural watercourse along its southern boundary and could be suitable for a number of agricultural uses.
“The property had strong interest since its launch,” says auctioneer David Quinn, who added there were eight registered bidders in advance of the auction.
The price expectation pre-auction was in the region of €12,000 per acre. On the day, bidding opened at €200,000 (€9,000/acre) before moving swiftly up to €300,000 (€14,000/acre) and surpassing expectations.
Upon reaching €320,000 (€15,000/acre), the property was declared “on the market”. Thereafter, it was left to two remaining bidders to battle it out until the hammer fell on a figure of €385,000 (€18,000/acre).
Speaking afterwards, Mr Quinn described the result as “an excellent outcome which highlights the demand for similar holdings”. He further added his client was “very pleased with the price achieved”.
