Hockey: Institute win Munster derby as they enjoy two wins over weekend

Catholic Institute’s Roisin Begley slots home the winner against UCC in their EYHL 1 game on Sunday.

Catholic Institute women moved to third in the EYHL 1 table with two narrow 1-0 victories over the weekend.

On Saturday a well worked short corner goal from Aoife Hickey was enough to grab the three points in what was a close match against Ards.

On Sunday UCC hosted Institute having narrowly lost to Pegasus on Saturday. UCC started the brighter but didn’t manage to create any clear-cut chances in the first quarter.

The best chance of the first half fell to Institute when they broke quickly but Seodhna Dervan shot just wide.

In the second half UCC forced their first short corner of the game after good play from Nikki Barry, however Institutes defended it well before going up the other end to force a corner of their own.

A well-worked corner back to the pusher was smartly saved by Laura McHugh at her near post.

UCC then began to look more likely to snatch a winner and they forced Pamela Smithwick Hearne into an excellent save when Jane Murphy found a yard at the near post to deflect a cross goalbound.

But it was Institute that snatched all three points in the last five minutes. First McHugh made an excellent save in a one v one before she was left in a two v one which was calmly finished by Roisin Begley.

In the men’s top division, Lisnagarvey are now in the driving seat as they beat title rivals Banbridge 2-1 on Saturday. Three Rock Rovers also slipped up in their title pursuit with a goalless draw against local rivals YMCA.

In EYHL 2 Pool B, Harlequins men secured a playoff place with a 2-0 win over Instonians. Julian Dale starred again notching up another two goals to bring this total for the season to the 50 mark.

In Pool A, both Bandon and C of I lost 3-2 however crucially for Bandon, that gave them the point they needed to secure a playoff place. It means that the three Munster men’s sides are now guaranteed playoff places with games to spare.

In women’s EYHL 2, Ashton’s slim hopes of making the playoffs were dashed as they lost 4-0 away to a strong Corinthians side.

Harlequins had a convincing 8-0 win over Greenfields but unfortunately already knew the playoffs were beyond their reach going into the game.
