It isn’t every day that one gets to buy a bit of Irish cultural and economic history when making a land purchase, so there should be a considerable turnout for the auction of the original Tayto farm in County Meath next week.

The 119-acre holding at Curraghwalls goes under the hammer on Friday, March 28, at the auction rooms of Robert B Daly & Sons on Laurence Street, Drogheda, Co Louth.

“We’re selling on behalf of the Murphy family,” said auctioneer Frank Flynn, “which is the family of Joe ‘Spud’ Murphy, the man who set up Tayto Crisps.

"It was the first farm he bought; his farm manager advised him to buy it," he said.

It’s a magnificent farm… laid out in three fields

The high quality of the property is well-suited to tillage farming or grass growing, and its pedigree of exceptional crop yields and fattening qualities is well established.

The well-drained lands are currently in tillage with a slight southerly aspect.

“I was talking to someone the other day about walking it and he said: ‘You don’t need to walk it, because when you park at the gate, the whole farm evolves out in front of you.’”

The farm enjoys an exceptional amount of road frontage and will be presented in lots: Lot 1 is a 51-acre parcel (guiding €1m — €19,600/acre); Lot 2 consists of 68 acres, including an old stone farmhouse and outbuildings (guiding €1.5m - €22,000/acre); and Lot 3 is the entire holding, guiding €2.5m (€21,000/acre).
