Watch: JD Vance shows off shamrock socks in meeting with Taoiseach

Mr Vance spoke of how he learned of 'sock diplomacy' while he was a senator

As Taoiseach Micheál Martin attended a breakfast with JD Vance to mark St Patrick's Day, the US vice president showed off a pair of shamrock-themed socks.

Mr Vance spoke of how he learned of "sock diplomacy" while he was a senator — the act of gifting socks to fellow senators.

After revealing the shamrock socks, he joked: “The president is a very big fan of conservative dress, and so if he notices these socks, you have to defend this as an important part of cementing the Irish-American relationship.”

Mr Martin thanked Mr Vance for his “warm welcome and hospitality” and joked that he would need to “adjust very rapidly” his “conservative” dress sense after seeing Mr Vance’s socks.
