It is a little surreal to say it out loud, but I have been modelling for over 15 years. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to spend these years surrounded by some of the most talented and knowledgeable people in the beauty industry; makeup artists, hairstylists, beauticians and fitness experts.

Every time I sit in the beauty chair, whether for a photoshoot or a fashion show, I’m all ears, eager to soak in every tip and trick. Watching makeup artists work is endlessly fascinating to me.

Starting as a shy 15-year-old, I remember how hair and makeup transformed me, making me feel like I could conquer the world. There’s a confidence that comes with a bold red lip or perfectly pencilled brows that’s simply indescribable. Over the years, I’ve picked up beauty insights from industry pros that have become my go-to. Here are some of the best.

1. The importance of prep

“Prepping the skin before you start is vitally important. “ says Zoe Clarke, pro make up artist extraordinaire. “Make sure you clean everything properly. A favourite of make-up artists, as we often don’t have access to water, is Bioderma’s Micellar Water for sensitive skin. It’s super fast at removing everything, and you don’t need to rinse it off with water afterwards – although I do try to if I can.”

After cleansing, Clarke recommends layering on a favorite serum and moisturiser before applying foundation. According to her, the skin should be hydrated but not oily. Her current go-to? Vichy’s LiftActiv B3 Serum and Moisturizer — a budget-friendly duo that smooths and hydrates, creating the perfect base for makeup.

It’s also crucial to prep the lips properly, especially if you are going for a bold lip colour. Removing dry skin in or around the lip area will prevent your lippy from bleeding out and make it last longer.

For this I love the Dr Pawpaw lip scrub and balm pot. On one end there is a sugar lip scrub, on the other a nourishing balm. A great little pocket friendly duo.

2. The magic of the right mascara wand

Choosing the right mascara can feel overwhelming with so many options available — but trust me, the secret lies in the brush! Finding the perfect wand for your lashes is a game-changer, so once you do, hold onto it.

Here’s my go-to routine: I start with one coat of mascara to separate the lashes and ensure every single one is coated. To really get in there, I wiggle the wand from root to tip for full coverage. Before the first coat dries completely, I follow up with a second coat to build length and create that wow factor. It’s a simple trick, but it makes all the difference.

3. Don’t forget lip liner

I find it nearly impossible to finish a makeup look without reaching for a lip liner — it’s a trick I picked up from Zoe over the years. I love using a natural shade, just a touch darker than my own lip colour, to subtly over-line and enhance my lips. This simple step can completely elevate your look. Just remember: less is more. Overdoing it can lead to noticeably overdrawn lips, which is never the goal.

My go-to? Maybelline’s lifter liner lip liners (say that three times fast). They offer an impressive range of natural shades that complement any lip colour, and best of all, they’re budget-friendly without compromising on quality.

4. Use a hair oil

My hair stylist and best friend, Alex Keville has been my go-to person for years on everything hair-related. Her top hair tip? Apply an oil or serum sparingly to wet hair.

“This speeds up drying and if you use one like my favourite product, Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Sublime Cristalli Liquidi, it also contains a heat protector.”

5. And a scalp oil

As a model, my hair has been through everything — countless styles, endless heat, and yes, the inevitable damage that comes with it. Over the years, I’ve learned from the best in the business that caring for your hair starts with looking after your scalp.

“An ideal scalp is the optimal start to perfect hair,” Keville says.

One product I can’t recommend enough is the Act+Acre Scalp Detox Oil. It’s a pre-wash treatment that works wonders by breaking down buildup from oil, sweat, and impurities. I pair it with their Stem Cell Serum. My scalp has never been happier.

6. Beauty starts from within

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned over the years is that a healthy lifestyle is the ultimate secret to radiant, glowing skin. While it’s tempting to pin our hopes on an expensive serum or a luxe foundation to deliver that angelic glow, the truth is, beauty always starts from within.

I start each morning with a big glass of lemon water. This is a simple but powerful habit to support digestion and stay hydrated while giving the skin a collagen-boosting dose of Vitamin C. I’ve noticed it brightens my complexion and keeps my skin feeling fresh and clear. When it comes to diet, make it a point to eat a variety of antioxidant-rich fruits every day. My favourites are berries, citrus fruits, and kiwis, which are all packed with vitamins that fight free radicals and protect skin from aging.

7. Embrace contrast therapy

Conor Corcoran from the Collective Fitness suggested this years ago and I’m so grateful.

“As a coach I swear by the benefits of alternating between the sauna and a cold plunge to optimise recovery and skin health,” he explains.

“After a workout, I recommend spending 10-15 minutes in the sauna, which helps dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. Then, follow this with a cold plunge to constrict the vessels and flush out toxins.

“Contrast therapy reduces inflammation, speeds up muscle recovery, and tightens skin, giving it a more youthful glow. Studies show that this practice not only helps with muscle soreness but also boosts collagen production, which keeps your skin firm. I always recommend this to my clients who want to feel and look rejuvenated after intense training sessions.”

8. Strength exercises can play a role

Strength training is another one of Corcoran’s recommendations I’ve taken on. Exercises like squats and resistance bands have become staples in my weekly routine – and they have a role to play beyond simply staying fit.

“As we age, strength training becomes even more crucial for keeping metabolism high and preventing conditions like osteoporosis,” he says, “But not only does it make you stronger, it also promotes better blood circulation and skin elasticity, giving you a firmer, more toned appearance.

“Lifting weights twice a week can significantly improve bone health and reduce the risk of fractures. Plus, the increased muscle tone and improved circulation that come with strength training are natural ways to keep you looking and feeling your best.”

The MUA must-haves

1. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré

This multi-purpose marvel is a cult classic for a reason: it cleanses, moisturises and soothes post-sun skin, and even doubles as a face mask. For a quick under-eye refresh, Embryolisse’s cooling eye stick is my secret to de-puffing and brightening up tired eyes.

2. Chanel’s Hydra Beauty Camellia Repair Mask

When there’s extra time, some make-up artists treat models to a quick face mask. I remember Christine Lucignano always prepping models skin with a face mask and I just thought it was the most luxurious thing. My go-to mask is this Chanel one, perfect for days when my skin feels dry or lacks radiance. Its rich, creamy texture is just what your skin craves in the colder months.

3. MAC Face and Body Foundation

Zoe Clarke says she would “be absolutely lost” without this iconic foundation, and I couldn’t agree more. “It’s ideal for a drier, perhaps more mature skin type,” she says. “It’s so sheer and gives the skin a beautiful glow. I then add concealer where it’s required.” For a more budget friendly option, try the new launch from Max Factor, the Miracle Pure Skin Reset Foundation. it’s fantastic.

4. YSL’s Touche Eclat Illuminating Pen

Clarke’s desert island product is this cult classic, but the Instant Under Eye Concealer from Irish brand AYU is also in her bag. “With its sheer yet effective formula, it seamlessly brightens and conceals dark circles, delivering a fresh, radiant look with no caking in sight.”

5. Laura Mercier’s Translucent Setting Powder

Sets makeup invisibly, leaving a weightless, shine-free finish.
