A four-day-old orphaned fox cub has been taken in by Kildare Wildlife Rescue

The little cub has to be bottle-fed every two hours — around the clock.

The cub’s arrival marked the start of spring and what is known as 'orphan season' at the rescue centre.

The hungry little cub is a male and was found in Ballyfermot. He was handed into the rescue centre for urgent care — weighing just 120g... the same weight as a packet of jelly sweets or a large bar of chocolate.

The aim is to get the cub to good health and to socialise him with other cubs before returning him to the wild in about six months.

Kildare Wildlife Rescue says to email them for advice at info@kwr.ie if you are ever unsure whether an animal needs help: "Do not feed the animal unless instructed by our team. We provide species-specific short-term care advice based on age, species, and condition of the animal."

Other advice includes:

  • Only contain the animal if you’re sure it needs help or you are advised to do so by a professional. Use a secure box lined with towels or fleece for grip and comfort during transport.
  • If you find injured wildlife, email info@kwr.ie with a photo or short video, your name, location, and phone number.
  • Do not attempt to capture large birds or predatory mammals such as herons, gannets, swans, badgers, or foxes. These animals require trained wildlife
responders with specialised equipment.
