Vikat Bhagat was found guilty Friday, February 14, of the rape and murder of Irish backpacker Danielle McLaughlin in Goa in March 2017. The conviction comes after years of trial delays. Vikram Varma, the victim’s family lawyer, confirmed Bhagat was convicted under the Indian Penal Code. Danielle’s sister, Jolene McLaughlin Brannigan, said the family was grateful for the verdict, which allows them to "start grieving her immeasurable loss."
