Working Life: Cutting the commute has given me the work/life balance I need after 40 years

Fiona Keegan, CEO, Brain Tumour Ireland: "Around 800 adults and 60 children are diagnosed with a brain tumour in Ireland annually, and this year we are shining the spotlight on family members and carers."

7.30am

I tune into Morning Ireland to see what state the world is in. I’ve worked from home since the pandemic, only travelling to our Dublin office if I have an in-person meeting or need to collect post or merchandise for fundraising events. Cutting out the daily Dun Laoghaire/Dublin commute has given me the work/life balance I need after 40 years!

8.30am

I check my diary and go through emails, which range from patients and families looking for support and information to answering fundraising queries and liaising with board members and research partners. I move to the ‘to do’ list, with the hope of achieving ‘10 before 10’—not always possible, but very satisfying when it happens.

10am

I meet with our communications manager to discuss this year’s National Brain Tumour Awareness Week from October 21 to 27. Around 800 adults and 60 children are diagnosed with a brain tumour in Ireland annually, and this year we are shining the spotlight on family members and carers. We are holding a webinar entitled ‘Who cares for me? Challenging the carer to care for themselves too.’ We also discuss other events planned for the week.

11am

My son (Oisín) is a trained barista, so I get a state-of-the-art coffee if he’s at home. I’m reminded of the money I used to spend on coffee when I was in the office.

1.30pm

Lunch and a chance to get ahead on household chores.

2.30pm

As we embark on a new strategic plan for 2025 – 2027, the afternoon is spent making sure I’m on track with the various strands. The process involves many stakeholders and their input is essential.

Plans have started for our final two events of the year: our November Remembrance Service for those who have lost their lives to a brain tumour and our December Family Day in Barretstown for children affected by a brain tumour, along with their siblings, parents, and grandparents. Santa Claus’s visit is the absolute highlight.

5.30pm

I draw up tomorrow’s list of ’10 before 10’ and head out for a walk with my golden retriever Bonnie.

I’ve taken up the challenge to learn a musical instrument in six months for a fundraising event next year, so my evenings are spent practising.

Celebrating 25 years of health and wellbeing
